Pen Drive Says Format It
'You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it.' Two buttons: Format Disk and Cancel. Click Cancel. Formatting is the one thing that turns a broken index into missing files.
What Windows Is Really Saying
Windows looked at the start of the drive for the file system and could not make sense of it. Pulling the drive out mid-copy, a power cut and a cheap hub are the usual causes. The message does not mean the files are gone. It means Windows cannot find the list of them.
Do This Instead
- Click Cancel. If the message comes back, click Cancel again.
- Open DRE Pro. The pen drive shows under External Drives with its size, even if it has no letter in This PC.
- Run a Quick Scan first. If your folders show up, preview and save them to the computer.
- If they do not, run a Deep Scan. It does not need the file system at all.
- Once your files are safe on another drive, format the pen drive if you want to keep using it.
Do Not Run CHKDSK First
CHKDSK and other repair tools rewrite the file system to make it consistent. That can cut damaged files loose and make them harder to find. Recover first. Repair afterwards, if at all.
Stop Doing It Again
Most pen drives that ask to be formatted were pulled out while Windows was still writing to them. The copy window had closed but Windows was not done. Use Safely Remove Hardware, or wait a few seconds after the light stops blinking.
Cheap hubs and front-panel ports on old desktops cause more of these than people expect. Plug the drive straight into the computer and keep a second copy of anything that matters. A pen drive is a way to carry files, not a place to keep the only copy.
