Stop Using The Drive Now

2 Min ReadThe one thing that decides whether a lost file comes back.

If you remember one thing from this site, make it this. A deleted or lost file lives in space the drive now thinks is free. Anything you write to that drive can land on it. A browser download, a WhatsApp backup, Windows quietly saving an update. Once it is written over, it is gone for good and no software anywhere can bring it back.

So the first move is not a scan. It is stopping.

What Counts As Using It

  • Saving or copying any file onto the drive.
  • Installing programmes onto it, including recovery software.
  • Taking new photos or videos on a card that lost some.
  • Running clean-up, defragment or optimise tools.
  • Accepting Windows' offer to format or repair the drive.

When The Lost Files Were On C:

This is the hard case, because Windows itself lives on C: and writes to it all the time. Close what you do not need. Do not browse, do not download. Install DRE Pro and start the scan as soon as you can, then leave the computer alone while it runs.

If you have a second computer, the safest route is to take the disk out, connect it to that computer as an extra drive and scan it there. Nothing is written to it that way.

When They Were On Another Drive

Easier. Leave that drive unplugged until DRE Pro is installed on the computer's own drive. Then plug it in, scan it and save what you find to the computer's drive or a third drive. DRE Pro only reads the drive it scans and will not save recovered files back onto it.

SSDs clear deleted blocks on their own shortly after a delete. With an SSD, scan the same day if you possibly can.
