Save Recovered Files Safely
You found the file. Good. The last step is the one people get wrong in a hurry: saving it back onto the drive it came from. That write can land on another file that was still waiting to be recovered, so DRE Pro refuses to do it.
Pick A Different Drive
Lost files on a pen drive? Save to the computer's own drive. Lost files on C:? Save to an external disk or a second internal drive. The destination needs enough free space for everything you ticked, so check the total before you start.
Check Before You Save
- Open a few files in the preview. A photo should show, a document should open.
- Look at the mark on each file. Good means it looks complete. Risky means parts may be damaged. Overwritten means the space was reused and the file cannot come back whole.
- Tick what you want. Use search and the filters for type, size and date to find things in a long list.
- Choose the destination in Save And Export and start.
After Saving
Open the saved files from their new place before you do anything else to the old drive. Once you are happy, copy them to a second place too. Only then format the old drive or put it back into use.
Every scan and recovery is kept under Saved Scans, so you can come back to a session and save more files later without scanning again.
A Few Hard-Learned Rules
- Lost files on C:? Save them to a pen drive or external disk, not to another folder on C:.
- Recovering a whole camera card? Save into a new, empty folder so the recovered photos do not mix with ones you already had.
- Recovering thousands of files? Save the ones you need most first. Your thesis before the downloads folder.
- Do not save to a network drive that syncs to the same computer you are recovering on.
