Copy A Weak Drive Before You Scan It
A drive that is failing has a limited number of reads left. Every scan uses some of them. A disk image copies the whole drive, sector by sector, into one file on a healthy drive. After that you scan the image and the weak drive can go back in its box.
When To Make One
- Drive Health says Warning or Failing.
- The drive is slow, freezes or keeps disconnecting.
- It holds the only copy of something you cannot lose.
Make The Image
- Connect a healthy drive with at least as much free space as the weak drive's full size.
- Open Disk Tools and choose Create Disk Image.
- Pick the weak drive as the source and the healthy drive as the place to save the image.
- Start it and let it finish. Do not use either drive for anything else meanwhile.
Scan The Image
- Open Disk Image Recovery, or pick Disk Image under Drives And Locations.
- Choose the image file you made.
- Run a Quick Scan, Deep Scan or RAW Scan, exactly as you would on a drive.
- Save what you find to a third place, not the weak drive and not on top of the image.
Keep The Image
Hold on to the image until every file you need is saved and checked. If a scan misses something, you can run another kind of scan on the image any time, with no risk to the original drive.
